[7] EXTRA DETAILS
Some ancient scriptures in India describe nine types of pearls. Before looking at this classification, one must know that in Sanskrit language, the pearl is known as "Mukta", "Muktaka", and "Indra-Ratna". Let us now look at the nine different types of pearl that are documented in the ancient writings.
(1) Sarpa Muktaka: It is almost impossible to get this type of pearl. This type of pearl rarely comes out from the head of a strong and big snake. The colour of this pearl could be light bluish. It is said that only the luckiest of people can ever find such a pearl. It is also said that who ever wears this pearl will be able to fulfill all his/her wishes and desires within a short period of time.
(2) Gaja Muktaka: This type of pearl is considered to be one of the best of all the varieties. It is said that this pearl emerge from the stomach of the elephant.
[4] WHERE ARE THEY FOUND?
Unlike most precious gems, which are found on or under the Earth, pearls are found in seawater like coral. Pearls are produced inside the shells of certain mollusks, which are found more than 15 or 20 meters below sea level.
It is understood that one shell can produce one pearl, but sometimes one shell can produce two or more pearls also. Some shells have even been known to produce ten pearls per shell.
