[9] THE FAMOUS RUBIES

There have been very few large rubies that have been preserved. The reason for this is that in older times, there was a law in Burma (the producer of the best rubies in the world), that any ruby found weighing more than10 carats should be surrendered to the king. So, even after finding a big sized ruby, people tried to cut it into smaller pieces to bypass the rule.

However, some big sized Rubies that have been preserved so far are as under.

(1) Peace Ruby: This Ruby was found in 1919 after the end of the First World War and due to the same reason the name given to this Ruby is "Peace Ruby". The weight of this gem is 43 carats.

(2) Long Star: This Ruby is kept in New York (U.S.A.). The weight of this gem is around 100 carats.

(3) Reeves Star: This gem is kept in the Smithsonian Institute, Washington. The weight of this Ruby is around 139 carats.
